Rent a dog field in Switzerland: 7 points to check

You want to let your dog run freely without reaching for the lead at every sound. A rented dog field can provide the right setting for that. But whether the area is fenced is not the only thing that matters. It needs to suit your dog and what you plan to do there.

Who rents out dog fields in Switzerland?

In Switzerland, dog fields for hire are offered by very different kinds of providers (as of October 2026):

  • Dog schools rent out their grounds, some only to their own clients and only after an introductory session.
  • Dog sport clubs sometimes also rent out their grounds to groups and individuals. You may only find out the price on request.
  • Dog centres sometimes rent out an indoor hall as well as outdoor fields.
  • Animal shelters also rent out meadows or fields in some cases. Use is not necessarily exclusive there: The rule may be first come, first served.

Hire is charged by time, usually by the hour. What differs is what the price covers:

  • Per field: You pay an hourly price for the area.
  • Per dog: Each dog is charged separately, and an additional dog from the same household sometimes costs less.
  • Per team: The price covers you with up to a set number of your own dogs. Extra dogs or accompanying people sometimes incur a surcharge.

Private and commercial use are sometimes handled separately. Dog schools and dog sitters may pay a different rate, and some providers ask when you book whether you will use the field privately or commercially.

These seven questions will help you decide whether a dog field is suitable for your visit.

1. Do you really have the area to yourselves?

A public dog field and a privately rented dog field meet different needs. Other dogs may join you in a public area. With an exclusive booking, you use the reserved area on your own during your appointment.

On DogOasis, a confirmed booking reserves the area exclusively for you and the dogs you have specified. Even so, pay attention to the label when searching: External listings are not DogOasis partners and cannot be booked through the platform. You will find the relevant information in the listing and in the DogOasis help section.

2. Is the fencing suitable for your dog?

For a small dog, gaps at ground level or between fence sections are particularly relevant. If your dog jumps or climbs, the fence height and construction also matter. A high fence alone therefore does not answer every safety question.

Look at the photos and details. Before letting your dog off the lead, check the current condition on site, especially gates, corners and transitions. If you find an open spot, keep your dog on the lead. A booking does not oblige you to take a risk.

3. What happens outside the fence?

Exclusive use does not automatically mean that no other animals or people will be visible. A walking path right beside the boundary, a neighbouring dog field or grazing animals can be exciting or stressful for your dog.

Think about your needs specifically: Do you simply need space for a search game, or does your dog already react to another dog at a great distance? In the second case, distance and visual screening may be more important than additional square metres.

4. How do you get in and out?

A double gate can make access easier, provided one gate is always closed before the other is opened. The route between the parking area and the field is just as important.

Read the access instructions before you leave. Plan your arrival so that you do not crowd previous guests at the gate. Keep your dog on the lead when getting in and out of the car and before entering the secured area. Prepare to leave in good time within your booked slot.

5. What facilities do you actually need?

You do not need an obstacle course for a first, calm visit. A clear, easy to access area may be more useful.

Depending on the season and your dog, check:

  • Is there shade at the time you plan to visit?
  • Is drinking water available, or do you need to bring your own?
  • What is the ground like in wet weather?
  • Is there somewhere to sit and a quiet area?
  • Is any existing equipment approved for use?

Photos give you an impression. They do not replace missing information about facilities that you depend on.

6. What rules apply to your visit?

Read the site rules before you book. Relevant points may include the permitted number of dogs, accompanying people, toys, food and how bitches in season are handled.

If you want to come with a trainer, clarify this use in advance as well. A field that you can rent privately is not necessarily approved for commercial training sessions.

7. What does the whole visit cost?

Compare the total price for your number of dogs and the duration you want. Also take travel and cancellation conditions into account. A field further away may be a good fit, but a long journey is part of the planning.

There is no standard price that applies to every dog field. The specific offer is what matters. In our price comparison (as of October 2026), published prices outdoors ranged from CHF 5 per dog per hour on a shared site of more than 2500 m² in Weier im Emmental (BE) to CHF 35 per hour for a field of 500 m² in Benken (SG). In the same comparison, an hour in an indoor hall cost between CHF 25 for about 265 m² in Buchs (SG) and CHF 67 excluding VAT for a ring of about 600 m² in Neftenbach (ZH). This is not an average for the whole of Switzerland.

Your first visit can be simple

Bring water, a bowl, lead, poo bags and a suitable reward. Give your dog time to arrive first and explore the area together. You do not have to fill your booked time with exercises: Perhaps the best use today is simply a calm sniffing walk.

Compare dog fields and dog exercise areas on DogOasis and look for the features that make the visit easier for your dog.
